“Attitude” Publication
PUBLICATION & PRINT PRODUCTION
This is a collectible publication based on the commencement speech by Margaret Atwood, called "Attitude". Throughout her speech, she opens people’s eyes to see different perspectives to certain life situations, where there is a positive and negative side to everything, but you can change the outcome and your attitude towards something simply by looking at it in a different way. By changing your attitude, you are changing your reality—in other words, your mood, emotions, decisions, etc. can lift from seeing a situation from a more positive perspective, and if you continue this pattern towards more life situations, your reality and entire mindset will change as well.
Change is always possible in your world, only if you are willing to try and to take the steps forward to moving your life and attitude in an upwards motion!
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Throughout this collectible publication, there are transparent pages to symbolize the change you would experience from altering your attitude positively - it shows a physical change in the visual effect when flipping through the book. Floral imagery and striking display typography are used to show the growth and beauty you will see within yourself when you change your mindset to see the world in a different light.
I chose to bind this publication through Coptic binding in order for the reader to experience each page in its full effect to see each spread laid flat. This project introduced me to a whole new skill of bookbinding, which was a lengthy process, but super fun to learn!
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROCESS
In the photos above, you can see a little bit of my process when creating the book along with some of the materials I used! It was extremely important for each of the signatures to be measured, cut and hole punched in exact measurements in order for all of the spreads to be laid out flat and evenly. Although this took a bit of a toll on my back from hunching over for 20+ hours, I am so happy I created it all by hand! I learned something new and was very pleased with how it turned out.
